Argentina overcame for second time during the competition the host team

Guadalajara, Mexico, October 19, 2011 - Argentina played another five set match to claim the Bronze Medal at the 16th Pan-American Games after defeating the host team of Mexico 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13). The previous award was the Gold Medal at the Mar del Plata 1995 games and this is its third Bronze Medal. Gerardo Conteras for Mexico topped the scores with 23 points while for Argentina Mariano Giustiniano scored 22 points, Sebastián Solé registered 17 and Federico Pereyra finished with 16. Argentine team also won the Bronze Medal in the Men's beach volleyball competition in this edition.

The big difference of the match was blocking. While the host team scored a total of 10 points the team coached by Javier Weber added 18. On this match the host team lead 2-1 and with some referee questioned scores the fourth set became very hot and gave excitement to the match. Thereafter Argentina concentrated and even though in the fifth most of the time the lead was for Mexico, at the end the light blue - white jersey prevailed.

Argentina played a total of 29 sets, only against Brazil it finished 1-3. All other matches ended in tie-breakers (Mexico -2-, Venezuela, Cuba and USA). No doubt a great effort but also the chance of winning a lot of time in the field playing against great American teams for all players.

“It was very tough and intense, but these boys were able to come here and win a medal, we recovered on the fourth set and on the fifth anybody could win”, said Weber.

“I think there are no technical or tactical explanations it was a defeat but at the same time I feel so proud of the way the guys played, and how the people felt identified with a Mexican volleyball team, it had not happened in a long time”, said Jorge Azair, coach of Mexico.

“It is a bittersweet moment, like yesterday, but today it was harder, because we were not at 100 percent, but we faced teams with a great volleyball tradition like Cuba and Argentina, and I also appreciate the love of the people”, stated Contreras of Mexico.

“We had difficulties but we played at a good level to get back home with a medal. I am glad”, said Nicholas Bruno about the Argentinean team, that will start its preparation for the first Olympic qualifying round in a few weeks at the World Cup in Japan.
