Lima, Peru, September 4, 2012 – Brazil subdued Argentina 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 26-24) in a classic South American duel that took place in the U-23 Women’s Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Lima on Tuesday.

Brazil improved their win-loss record to 2-0 and Argentina fell to 1-1 as both teams were coming off victories in the opening day in Pool A.

The winners held a commanding offensive margin with a 42-30 advantage in kills and produced an 8-3 difference in blocks. Both teams scored six service winners.

Gabriela Braga Guimaraes and Rosamaria Montibeller topped Brazil with 18 and 16 points respectively and both players had 1 block and 2 aces. Argentina’s Lucia Fresco was the only player of her side with double figures in the scoring charts finishing with 18 points, including two blocks.

“I am very proud of my players because even though they are so young they are learning to face difficult situations like playing against a player of the caliber of Lucia Fresco,” Brazil’s coach Luizomar Moura.

“We didn’t play well today”, Argentina’s Horacio Bastit admitted. “We failed in our reception and defense and they pressed us with their strong serves and complicated the game for us.”

Brazil’s captain Rosamaria Montibeller said: “It was a balanced match but we developed a good tactical game to control them.”

Argentina’s Antonella Curatola said: “Brazil played a very good game and their serves pressed us. Now we have to think in our next match against Colombia.”
