U 23 PAN-AMERICAN CUP: ARGENTINA WINS THE SILVER MEDAL

LANGLEY, Canada, September 30, 2012 – At the "classical" South American match, Brazil won the gold medal at Men’s U23 Pan American Cup after defeating Argentina 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-18) this Sunday late evening. Henrique Batagim scored 16 points for Brazil, while Gonzalo Lapera finished with 10 for Argentina. Brazil’s blocking game had in Leandro Santos the strong man with 4 converted attempts, while libero Rogerio Carvalho, was named the Most Valuable Player of the competition.

“I am very glad, but I still don’t know why Argentina’s captain (Gonzalo Quiroga) didn’t play,” said Brazil’s captain Thiago Veloso. “We have finished with a gold medal, but not everything has been done yet for us, because we must be focused now on the South American Championship that qualifies for the 2013 World Championship”.

Quiroga said that he was not able to perform, because a muscular injury he suffered since the training camp and tour held by Argentina against Canada’s college teams previous to the U 23 Pan-American Cup.

“Unfortunatelly I couldn’t make it, but at the same time collectively this tournament helped us a lot to see what we have to improve for the continental championship and now the next days will help us for a full recovery of injuries in the team” he indicated.

Argentina, only defeated by the same rival twice, finished on the podium. “Maybe we could do more in the final. Generally we came from the bottom to the top, and increased our level during the tournament. This was a good quality tournament” said coach Fabian Muraco.

“Facing Argentina always generates high expectation, I am happy for tonight’s victory, but now we have to prepare for the South American Championship,” said Brazilian coach Leonardo Carvalho. “I want to thank the people of Langley for hosting a great tournament that is also a great opportunity for young players”.
