Argentina won its third World Champ. match

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 2, 2013 — World No.13 Argentina thrashed lower-ranked Tunisia in easy straight sets 25-14 25-18 25-5 to snatch their second win in the 17th-20th classification round of the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Friday. Elina Rodriguez led Argentina with 15 points including 11 kills from 23 attempts. Sol Piccolo assisted with 11 deadly attacks. Emna Khalfa scored a match-high 14 points, 13 of them through unchallenged attacks, for Tunisia.

Argentina, which outclassed Algeria in comfortable straight sets to win their first match in the classification round on Thursday, used their height advantage to attack exceptionally well at the net. Elina Rodriguez and Sol Piccolo took turns finding gaps in the Tunisia’s court. As expected, Argentina took the set with ease 25-14.

After going down 0-1, Tunisia regrouped to fare better in the second set. Emna Khalfa shone through her impressive skills to overcome the taller blockers with her fierce spikes. However, with the greater experience and form, Argentina won the close set 25-18.

Holding a 2-0 advantage, Argentina proved uncatchable in the third set which saw the South American side race to a commanding 11-0 lead from the beginning. Powerful Sol Piccolo and Irene Verasio joined hands in puncturing the Tunisian defence with their exceptional attacks. The Argentineans allowed the world No.24 only five points in the totally one-sided battle to win the set 25-5 and the match.

Press Conference:

Guillermo Caceres, head coach of Argentina: “I’m glad that we can beat Tunisia in straight sets. Against Mexico in our next match, I think it must be a tougher task. Mexico are stronger than Tunisia and Algeria. We will do our best, anyway.”

Sol Piccolo, team captain of Argentina: “I’m glad to win this match. They played well, but we fared much better. I think our strong point is our team’s unity. We combined well in attacking and blocking.”

Silimane Rim Ben, head coach of Tunisia: “Argentina are a very good team. They have greater experience than us, better attacking and better techniques. That’s what counts for their win over us. We next take on Algeria, the team we beat 3-1 in African Championship. So, I think we will beat them again. We will try our best.”

Emna Khalfa, team captain of Tunisia: “Argentina a good team. They are taller than us. We had a problem in blocking. They attacked so hard. I hope we can come out with better form in our next match and if possible, we will try our best to beat our rivals.”
