Quiroga spiking over Brazilian blocking

Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 11, 2013 - In an outstanding final match showing the best teams of the South American Championship held this Saturday evening in the city of Cabo Frio, it took the host team a tie-breaker to defeat Argentina obtaining its 29th title in 30 editions. The final result was 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 24-26, 15-10). The Argentine team therefore closed this competition winning the silver medal but mainly, fulfilling the goal of obtaining one of the two berths at stake for the Polish World Championship 2014.

Through out Federico Pereyra digging Argentina got the lead on the first set 2-4 with the support of Nicolas Uriarte's ace that improved the advantage to 4-7. The setter kept putting pressure serving and Argentina improved to 4-10. The whole team shone with the good performance of Rodrigo Quiroga, Sebastian Sole and Pablo Crer included. With the best weapon, serving, the team coched by Javier Weber got its first partial victory.

The second set started with a point-by-point fight but Brazil got the lead at the end after both teams had the set on their hands. The third set with the score levelled on both sides of the net was also very equal. This ttime the best weapon of the local team was blocking and they obtained their second point toward the title.

With De Cecco and Kukartsev as starting line-up players Argentina renewed their confidence on the fourth set. Brazil got a leadership 24-20 with an ace and a nonforced error argued by Argentina (red card) and it seemed the match came to an end but coming from behind Argentina finished forcing a tie-breaker definition winning with Uriarte's ace 24-26.

The tie-break was a terrific fight but Brazil got an early advantage through out Wallace. The home team won in confidence helped by the local fans retaining the title they won each time they participated of the South American Championship.
