Kukartsev once more was tthe top scorer of Argentine

Ankara, Turkey, August 25, 2013 – Argentina defeated Mexico by 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-17) within a little over an hour at Baskent Volleyball Hall in Ankara. The Latin American clash was Sunday’s first match in Pool B at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Turkey. Pablo Koukartsev scored 13 points for the winning team to claim the top of the match’s scorers’ table. Roberto Rincon settled for 9 points on his tally to become Mexico’s best scorer of the game.

The Argentines now have two victories and are well in contention to make it successfully to the Round of 16. This Monday they will face at 13.30 Argentine time Estonia closing the first round.

The first set was where outcome of the match was actually decided. The two teams played really well, they put constant pressure on each other and the lead in the score frequently changed hands. It was Argentina that reached the 25th point first to close the set at 25-22. This seemed to have been the end for Mexico in this game. In the following two sets they could not stay competitive to their opponents. Coach Jorge Lopez’s players committed as many as 11 unforced errors in each of these two sets to let the Argentines control the situation on the court. In set two the South Americans crushed their North American opponents by 25-14. In set three they started off with an 8-1 run with Joaquin Lucas Layus behind the serving line. Mexico tried to come back by stepping up their blocking efforts, but it was too little too late. Gonzalo Quiroga finished it all off with a powerful spike for the final 25-17 Argentina’s way.

Argentina played better tactically and served very well, while Mexico committed too many errors. These were the reasons the South Americans won this FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship match according to the post-game statements by the coaches and the captains.

Press Conference:

Jorge Lopez, coach of Mexico: “We made too many more mistakes than yesterday. The Argentines served better than all the other teams we played before and that pushed us to make more mistakes and made our job harder. Our next match is against Iran. This is our final chance to finish our pool in a good place.”

Jonathan Ponce, captain of Mexico: “We started the match with confidence. But Argentina served tougher in the following moments. This is why we started to play worse and made us attack badly. They played very well. We need to forget this match and start concentrating on our next and last match in our pool.”

Fabian Muraco, coach of Argentina: “Our team played well today. The players' tactics were perfect and we won. Our next game against Estonia will be very difficult, because they play very well. Mexico is a great team as well and they just could not play well in this game.”

Fernando Arpajou, captain of Argentina: “We covered our plan, we did exactly what we needed to do, and therefore we had this high difference in the score points. We see every match as a final match and we try to do our best in each game.”
