JUNIORS' MEN WORLD CHAMP.: ARGENTINA AMONG THE BEST 8

Argentina won a tight match v. China and stands among the best 8 teams

Ankara, Turkey, August 28, 2013 – Argentina managed to qualify for the quarterfinals of the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Ankara after a 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 29-27) victory over China in a round-of-16 match at Baskent Volleyball Hall in the Turkish capital.The South Americans will face Italy in their battle for a semifinal spot, while the Asian side will move to Izmir to fight for the 9th place in the final ranking.

Argentinawere able to break away between the two technical time-outs of the first set against China.Their three aces and Gonzalo Quiroga’s great overall performance helped the South Americans win the set by 25-19.In the second set Fabian Muraco’s team had to come from behind as the Chinese greatly improved their spiking efforts and took the lead by a wide margin.Quiroga continued to be extremely valuable for his team and scored another 9 points for the eventual 25-23 in favour of Argentina.In set three China improved their attacking and blocking even furtherand despite some productive spiking from Argentina’s Pablo Koukartsev were able to maintain a lead and reduce the lag after 25-23.The fourth set was by far the most interesting one.China set out on a quest for the tie-breaker and took the lead through the most part of the set.Argentina caught up to prompt a dramatic ending.After 23-24 they saved three set points for China to eventually overcome the strong opponent and settle for a 29-27 final score.

With 10 points coming from the last set alone, Pablo Koukartsev piled up a total of 25 points on his tally to become the best scorer of the match.Teammate Gonzalo Quiroga added 23 to Argentina’s victory.Tingwei Yan was most prolific for China with 15 points.

China are disappointed to have missed their chances against the strong Argentine team, while the South Americans are pleased to have beaten their opponents by 3-1 in their round-of-16 game at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Ankara. This is what the coaches and the captains of the two teams had to say after the match.

Di Zhang, coach of China: “We had our chance today, but we could not use it and we could not win. The players tried hard, but we could not do it. We will prepare better for the next match.”

Tianyi Mao, captain of China: “It was a good match and a good play. Argentina’s players know well how to attack and it was one of their strong points. I think Argentina are a very good team.”

Fabian Muraco, coach of Argentina: “I am very happy and all my players are very happy. China are a very strong, excellent team. We were very nervous in the beginning of the match, but all my players did what they had to do on the court and this paved our way to the quarterfinals.”

Fernando Arpajou, captain of Argentina: “I am very happy with the result of this match. Now we are waiting to find out our next opponent. Both Serbia and Italy are strong teams. We will do our best in the quarterfinals.”
