Argentine girls celebrating their victory over Peru at semi-final match

Popayan, Colombia, November 14, 2013 - The 2nd South American U Youth’s Girls Championship ended after 38 very intensive matches among 8 countries that participated in the city of Popayan playing during five consecutive days. The grand final finished Brazil v Argentina finished 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 15-9) showing the development of two of the most experienced teams, that together with Peru that overcame Chile winning the Bronze Medal gave the youngest official grass-root volleyball teams a great party where the real champion was the audience that enjoyed at Coliseo Menor watching outstanding players giving their utmost in this competition.

Brazil reconfirmed the title obtained at the first edition of this championship of this category held in the year 2011 in Uruguay. Brazil had some problems to overcome Argentina in about two hours playing. The engagement was very intensive and full of emotions. The first set was for Argentina without any questions that allowed them to put the series 1-0 by a big difference, 25-16. Brazil started the second set very concentrated and with full engagement trying to stop the rival offensive putting pressure from serving and amazing blocking. Therefore, they did not allow the girls coached by Guillermo Caceres lead on the score closing the set 25-18 and putting the series 1-1.

The third set, was again for Brazil as the Brazilian blocking became the best weapon to stop any lead of Argentina. In a very tied set, the girls coached by Ricardo Picinin finished winning to lead the series 2-1. When the fourth set seemed won by he verdeamarellas, Argentina coming from behind put into troubles the six Brazilian girls forcing a tie-breaker.

In the definitive set, the Brazilian girls making good use of their “classical” South American rival, added to their own offensive, obtained a good result winning the match and their consecutive title.

The Bronze Medal was won by Peru that obtained the second place, the silver medal two years ago in Uruguay and finished with a record win-los 7-2 in this edition. Even though they felt bitter their defeat against Argentina the girls coached by Juan Diego Garcia overcame their defeat and got revenge against Chile defeating them 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21). With the outstanding hands of Maricarmen Guerrero and Nicole Abreu and the defensive job of Valentina Carrasco, the new U Youth Girls Peruvian team won the third place.
