SOUTH AMERICAN BEACH TOUR: NEW SEMI FINALS FOR ARGENTINA

Argentina playing against one of the host teams of Uruguay

Montevideo, Uruguay, February 16, 2014 - Argentina keeps showing its utmost at the new stop of the South American Beach Volleyball Tour, this time in the resort of Pocitos, in the city of Montevideo at the third stop of the 2014 season. Both Argentine Gold Medallist won in Chile now stand among the best four teams: Ana Gallay-Georgina Klug in the women's competition and Julian Azaad-Ian Mehamed on the men's. This Sunday they will play semi-finals heading towards a new medal.

On the preliminary round, Gallay-Klug are one of the strongest teams of the continent and in a pool of five teams, they finished on top undefeated in four matches played without losing a single set. They overcame the Uruguayan Ferrari-Mendez and Peixoto-Rotti, the Colombian sisters Galinda and the other Argentine pair, Julieta Puntin-Virginia Zonta.

Puntin-Zonta were eliminated on the first round finishing ranked third with a good performance. They defeated clearly both host teams to finish with a record win-loss 2-2.

With reference to the first round in the men's competition, Argentina also started in the five teams round and had to play against the two local teams. Mehamed-Azaad defeated Pablo Bianchi-Facundo del Coto (the other Argentine team) 2-0 and finished second runner-up in the pool. They also overcame Da Silva-Berian and Pascale-Cabral (the two Uruguayn teams) and were defeated by Bruno-Hevaldo from Brazil (a record of win-loss 3-1).

Del Coto-Bianchi, as with the second women's team also finished third in their pool, defeated by Bruno-Hevaldo and overcoming both local teams but could not qualify for the final round.

In the afternoon, quarter-finals were played. Gallay-Klug were very strong facing the second ranked Uruguayan team, Fortunati-Nieto 2-0 (21-10, 21-16). Now they overcame in semi-finals Horta-Sabino, the second ranked Brazilian team in a very exciting 2-1 (21-17, 21-23, 15-12) and now wait for the winners among Maia-Berti (BRA 1) and Gomez-Guigou (URU 1) for the final match, already securing at least the Silver Medal and the second place in this stop.

The luck of the men's was decided in a terrific quarter-final series showing outstanding output by all players. Mehamed-Azaad overcame in a tie breaker coming from behind the best Uruguayan Team, Renzo Cairus-Nicolas Zanotta (18-21-21-17, 15-12). In Semi-final they face the best Brazilian team, Thiago-Oscar and now wait for their rivals for the Bronze Medal as they were defeated in a very hard match 2-1 (24-26, 19-21, 8-15). The other semi-finalist are BRA 2 - De Paula-Sabino and the Chilean Cousins Grimalt.
