Conte was the top scorer of the match

Berlin, Germany, June 19, 2014 — In the first match between Germany and Argentina in Berlin, Argentina celebrate a 0-3 (24-26, 23-25, 20-25) victory against an threadbare German squad, which was missed by Denis Kaliberda, Simon Hirsch and Christian Fromm due to injuries. With 20 points Argentina stands next to France (with one less match) and increased their lead to the German Team with now 10 points. The top scorer were Facundo Conte with 20 rallies for the South American Team while Tom Strohback scored 11 for the European one. Tomorrow, at the same venue and time (18.00 local time) they will play their second and last match of the fifth weekend.

1.100 spectators saw a good start of Germany. Especially Tom Strohbach troubled the defence of Argentina with float serves and gained the first two point lead in the first set (5:3). Two blocks and further successful attacks turn the game around and cared for three point advantage for Argentina (15-12). But the Germans kept the pace with a Tom Strohbach (4 rallies) in a good mode and a good working block defence system (21-22). In the end Germany fended two set balls, but it was not enough to win the game. 5 to 3 block made the difference in this heat.

In the second set it seemed that the German Tea learned from the past mistakes and started out in a good shape and lead 8-6 until the first technical time-out. Argentina had problems in the reception and failed their attacks in the German defence. A hard earned 19-13 lead was the deserved result of this. It was a total black out of the whole German Team which changed the course of the second set. Argentina draw near point by point and fought bravely for the equalizer (22:22). Things turned definite after the 23-22 advantage. Sebastian Sole ended it with a block by 25-23.

Things never changed in the third set. Argentina took on an early five point advantage 6-1 and managed it easily to the 25-20 victory. For Germany Tom Strohbach was the best player with 11 points. Facundo Conte scored 20 times for Argentina.

Argentina’s head coach Julio Velasco said: “We took on the victory, because Germany played with the second team. I´m not satisfied with our performance. We have to improve our game in every way. Now we concentrate on the next game tomorrow. In view of the World Championship in Poland we are on the second level.”

Gemany´s head coach Vital Heynen said: “We played with an unusual team. My players had to solve tasks they never had before like setter Sebastian Kühner in attack. We have a long injury list, but we must win the second match.”
