Berlin, Germany, June 21, 2014 – In the last FIVB Word League 2014 game in front of the home crowd, Germany have to accept the second defeat against Argentina within two days losing 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-21). Sebastian Sole topped Argentine score with 12 rallies. while for Germany, the middle player Michael Andrei and Sebastian Kühner were the best with 13 and 10 rallies respectively. In Pool D all will be decided on the sixth and final weekend of the Intercontinental Round when Argentina and France that top the Pool will face each other at European venues in France.

It was an equal beginning in the first set (2-2). Both teams started out with a solid side-out. Two blocks turned the momentum to the Argentinian Team and gained a two point lead (8-6). After the second technical time out Argentina set in the pace and profited from a weak German reception and attack. Opposite Marvin Prolingheuer and outer attacker Tom Strohbach were often stopped by the block which score four times in the first set. So Argentina increased their lead and made it to four until the middle of heat one (12-8). German Head Coach Vital Heynen reacted with an unusual measure and switched setter Sebastian Kühner for opposite Marvin Prolingheuer (17-12). It didn´t help, Argentina dominated and ended it at 25-16.

Germany had difficulties getting in to the first set. Argentina took on and three point advantage and until the first technical time-ou (8-5). The Argentine team beat tactically very concentrated on the players Björn Höhne and Dirk Westphal (8-5) and troubled the German defence. But the 1.200 spectators saw a better German Team well-balanced in contrary to the first set. Germany changed the things to an equal 16-16. It seemed that the German Team had the chance to win the set, but their dreams were destroyed by Sebastian Sole and who scored five times and cared a 22-17 lead.

Germany tried to find their spirit in the third set and went up to 4:2. But it was the only leadership for the German Team. Argentina bounced back and took advantage on the German mistakes. The result went up to 16-10 and 21-15 and destroyed the German dreams for a victory in the last home match. The match ended with a service fault from Sebastian Kühner to 25-21.

Press Conference:

Argentina head coach Julio Velasco: “Against to yesterday it was a better performance of my team in all aspects of the game. We will try to beat France next week to reach the first place, but they are nearly the best team in our group.”

Germany head coach Vital Heynen: “It was worse than yesterday. Volleyball is such an easy sport, but if you made no point in attack, then it isn’t possible to win a game.”

Germany´s setter Sebastian Kühner: “I´m already a setter. This decision to play in attack was the reason of our injurie and it was a new and interesting experience. We knew that the games against Argentina would be hard, but this was not the end we played for.”
