ARGENTINA QUALIFIED FOR THE BRONZE MEDAL AT THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES

Cuba strong output could not be stopped by Argentina

Tijuana, Baja California, August 16, 2014.- Cuba became the first finalist at IX Men’s Pan American Cup after defeating Argentina 3-2 (25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 15-13).

Javier Jimenez Scull and Rolando Cepeda combined a total offense of 49 points, with 23 and 26 units respectively, while David Fiel closed with 11 points on the Cuban side.

Argentina fought hard until the end with Pablo Koukartsev as the South American’s best weapon by recording 15 points. Rodrigo Villalba followed him with 15, and Lucinao Zornetta scored 13.

Cuban coach, Rodolfo Sanchez, said that his team matched a great opponent. “They have such a great team that really came from behind and got back in the game after a 0-2 score. The both of us made the same mistakes and took advantage of the opportunities when they arrived and are ready to face any rival, because you are not here to chose one, you play to win,” He said.

“It was a very difficult match, because Argentina came with the same goal as us: to win the tournament. We won the first two sets and after that we had some complications in the third and fourth, but we knew how to win the fifth and we have played very well every fifth set during the tournament,” Rolando Cepeda declared.

“The most important thing is that we kept our head up and got back after the 2-0 score against us. But we were not so fine in some things and the match slipped away. We always have to look for the highest goal,” stated Argentinean coach, Hernan Ferraro.

The captain of Argentina, Demian Gonzalez, remarked: “We started pretty bad, by giving up two sets. We had everything to win the first set, but we couldn’t. We surrendered the second one, but after that, we played like we should do play in a semifinal. It was so tight, but also made some mistakes after the tie break.”

Argentina will play for the third place and the bronze medal on Saturday.
