ARGENTINA WON THE BRONZE MEDAL AT THE 9TH PAN-AMERICAN CUP

Argentina won the third tie-breaker of their competition

Tijuana, Mexico, August 18, 2014 - Argentina claimed the Bronze Medal at IX Men’s Pan Am Cup after beating Puerto Rico in five sets. The scores were 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 24-26 and 18-16.

Maurice Torres scored 32 points for Puerto Rico, joining to the 30’s club in the history of the Cup. He also aced three times. Jackson Rivera scored 15 and Mannix Roman 14, while Jose Rivera finished with 10.

Argentina finished with three double-digit scorers. Rodrigo Villalba closed with 20, while Pablo Koukartsev with 17, and Facundo Imhoff with 15.

“We had the ball to close the set and we couldn’t. If you can’t do so, your rival grows and gets stronger, they also play. We were late to react by two or three points, but after suffering a lot, we finish so glad because we go back with a medal,” said Argentinean captain Demian Gonzalez.

“I felt some kind of pain in my arm, because this was just my third competition in three years. Our biggest strength was on defense, but I think that we had played better in some way,” Hector Soto, captain of Puerto Rico said.

“Definitively the match could go on any side. In the last two sets we made some changes with fresh players, to contribute to improve the result. We got in the match again but obviously the victory slipped away from our side,” Puerto Rican coach, David Aleman stated.

For Argentinean head coach, Hernan Ferraro, the Pan Am Cup was a great learning experience. “I’m glad because we won, but after all they showed a great effort, they did things right, despite some changes during the match, but fortunately we won today and finished with a win. We played several five setters but, the kids responded pretty well,” the South American coach remarked.
