Second defeat for Argentina girls in this competition

Ica, Peru, September 11, 2014. - Dominican Republic sweeps Argentina 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) to clinch the Women’s U-23 FIVB 2015 World Championship berth and the Women’s U-23 Pan-American Cup semifinals.

The Caribbean team won the FIVB World Championship ticket, the last spot available for the NORCECA Confederation -Cuba also qualified- and they complete the list of four semifinalists. Dominicans will meet with Cuba and Peru against Colombia in Friday’s semifinals.

Dominican Republic started strongly against Argentina who performed out of rhythm and lacking energy. Argentina wasn’t able to put more resistance as Dominican Republic kept the score in the favor without leaving anything to chance.

Despite committing more unforced errors, 21 in total, Dominicans held a huge advantage in kills by a 42-26 margin and in blocking with a 13-3 margin; in the service category, both scored two points.

The top scorers for Dominican Republic were captain Brayelin Martinez with 24 points and opposite player Gaila Gonzalez with 11 points. On the Argentinian side, outside hitter Camila Hiurela led with 11 points.

“I feel very happy for the result, we knew it was an important match as we were battling for the world championship ticket; now we must continue forward” indicated Brayelin Martinez .

Priscila Bosio, Argentinian captain said “it was a tough match in which Dominicans played very well, as for us, we weren’t organized and we lacked attitude to play stronger; the championship continues so we must work harder to finish in the best possible position”.

Coach for Dominican Republic , Wagner Pacheco said “we had the opportunity to win the spot for the world championship and we entered to kill; there was no other option. We played with heart, wanting to be in the world championship and we did. Now we must think in Cuba and practice because it will be a difficult match”.

Guillermo Nazabal, coach of Argentina expressed that Dominican Republic was too strong “we tried to make things difficult for them, using our serves, which on occasions helped, but they solved very well with their outside hitters and with higher spikes. We don’t have players of that height; Brayelin is spectacular and opposite player Gaila topped our blockers”.
