CONTINENTAL CUP: ARGENTINA WITHOUT ANY CHANCES FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES

Santiago, Chile & Rosario, Argentina, June 27, 2016 - In the last minute and after a Golden Set there is celebration in Santiago de Chile! Chile wins the South American berth for the Olympic Games Rio de Janeiro 2016 while Uruguay and Venezuela will participate of the next Olympic Qualy in Sochi, Russia. In a sunny morning in Santiago took place the final series of the Men’s Continental Cup with the winner qualifying for the Beach Volleyball Olympic Games that start in Rio next August 6th. The competition that ended today, not only gave the winner the chance of participating at the Olympic Games but also the second and third ranked countries (out of the six participating) will have one more chance to qualifying for Rio and it will take place in Sochi, Russia for Venezuela and Uruguay.

First, the Colombian Janjares-Murray overcame the French Guyana Pons-Zopie 2-0 (21-19, 23-21) while on the second field, Uruguay and Argentina were playing their first match of the day. The victory was for Uruguay 2-1 (18-21, 21-16, 15-8) and following the athletes of the same countries that played Sunday’s debut match, Jorge Cabrera-Juan Paternina COL in the main field faced Koffi-Jean-Christi of the French Guyana with a new victory for Colombia 2-0 (21-16, 21-13) and in a match with Uruguayan superiority Renzo Cairus-Mauricio Vieyto URU overcame Argentina Ian Mehamed-Nicolas Capogrosso 2-0 (21-19, 21-8).

About noon, crowded started arriving to see the matches of Chile in this good weather Sunday with Tobar-Salinas facing the Venezuelan Tigrito-Peter, with Venezuela winning the match in straight two 21-13 sets. Then, the Grimalt cousins defeated Villafañe-Henriquez in a very fought first set match 2-0 (24-22, 21-14).

In the afternoon, matches went on with Manjarres-Murray COL2 facing Guyana Koffi-Jean-Christi in a very exciting tiebreaker match won by Colombia 2-1 (21-11, 15-21, 15-11) and at the same time URU Molina-Perez playing v ARG Mehamed-Capogrosso winning the last 2-1 (21-14, 17-21, 15-8). Then, in a very fought match Colombia faced again Guyana with the local Chilean fans supporting Guyana’s pair but it was Colombia that won it 2-1 (21-13, 25-27, 15-12), In the second field there was WO in the match Argentina v Uruguay with the injury of Pablo Bianchi and therefore the match could not be played and the score was for Uruguay (21-0, 21-0) winning the ticket for Sochi.

Then, about 15.30 Chile faced Venezuela with both teams arriving to the last day competition undefeated. First Chile Matias Tobar-Rodrigo Salinas faced Jesus Villafañe-Jackson Henriquez, with the victory for Venezuela 2-0 (double 21-16).

Then in the last match of the day, Grimalt cousins fought the berth for the Olympic Games v the Venezuelan Tigrito-Peter in a very exciting match, that was even supported by a small music band (drum group) winning the match 27-25, 21-19 and forcing a Golden Set with Venezuela changing their players to the 2nd team. In an historical victory 15-11 the local Chilean duel celebrated their ticket for the Olympic Games Rio de Janeiro 2016.

In Rosario, meanwhile, with Venezuela already qualified for the Olympic Games and with Benet injured, Argentina could not present their main pair.
