Tehran, Iran, July 2, 2016 - Serbia suffered their second straight defeat, in Group 1 of the FIVB World League, going down 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) to Argentina, who were supported by a partisan Iran crowd. In a wonderful performance after defeating last weekend France (title holder) and Russia (World Champion) today Argentina defeated the runner-up behind Russia and will say good-bye to this year's FIVB World League facing in an Argentine coaching duel (Velasco-Lozano), his former coached team, the host team of Iran in their return to the FIVB World League Group 1 live broadcast by TyC Sports at 13.20 Argentine time.

The match opened with Serbia taking an early 6-1 lead. But the Iranian fans repeatedly raised the name of former Iran and now Argentina coach Julio Velasco in support of the South Americans, who rallied to take 13-11 lead. Serbia coach Nikola Garbic called his players out to stop the flow of the game, but Serbia were still two points down at the second technical time out. The European side were giving away points on unforced errors -eight in total in total in the first set- as the confident spikes of Cristian Poglajen widened the gap for Argentina 19-16 before an exciting finish at 25-23.

With Velasco still carrying the applause of the crowd, Argentina were decisively leading the second set 6-2 forcing Garbic to bring on reserve setter Aleksa Brdjovic -though Argentina were still ahead by four at the first technical time-out. Uros Kovacevic stepped up to allow Serbia to tie at 11-11, but at the second technical time out Argentina were back in the lead by two. Serbia could not reduce the margin and Argentina closed the set 25-22.

The third set was a copy of the second, with Argentina showing improvement in attack and reception, while capitalising on consecutive errors by Serbia. Garbic called a time out as his team trailed 2-6 and his three substitutions failed to turn the tide as Argentina decisively took the set 25-20.

Press Conference:

Argentina thrashed Serbia in straight sets handing the European side their second straight defeat in the FIVB World League, as the Tehran fans routed for former Iran and currently Argentina coach Julio Velasco.

Argentina Captain Luciano De Cecco: We are very happy with this victory. We played good and aggressive volleyball. We served well. I think tomorrow's match against Iran will be difficult due to their fans.

Argentina Coach Julio Velasco:I agree with my captain. Our serve was good today. We started the match so badly and then begin to play better. I want to thank the Iranian audience who supported us. But tomorrow it will be different as it will be a difficult match as the crowd will of course, cheer for their team. My players have the opportunity to improve in these conditions.

Serbia Captain Dragan Stankovic:There is nothing special to say. We did not play well. We start the match very well up to the 6th point and we could win, but after that we stopped and deserved to lose the game.

Serbia Coach Nikola Garbic:I better prefer not to say what I feel. I am very disappointed, not because of the result but about the way we played. I hope the reason of playing like this is not that we have already qualified to the Final Six. We are not at a position to think of who we are playing. We have to carry a good approach for every game, against every opponent. We need to play with aggression, concentration and determination which did not happen unfortunately tonight. I hope tomorrow we are the same up until against Iran in the third set. We did not play with Atanasijevic as he has some minor injury in his leg and instead we played with Luburic whom we just discovered. He had good performances against Russia, Bulgaria and Iran.
