Gallay action at the first match v the Spanish pair

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Ana Gallay-Georgina Klug were defeated at their Olympic Rio debut by the Spanish Baquerizo-Fernandez 0-2 (11-21, 19-21) even thought they tried hard to force a tiebreaker improving their performance a lot in the second tie set. This Monday they will play their second preliminary round match v the host team of Brazil.

The first set started even but the Spanish very soon showed better digging and defence with their best weapon spiking on top of the performance. Always from behind, the Argentine output could do little against the utmost of the European pair. A time-out at 9-12 helped both teams to improve their play but Baqerizo-Fernadez showed their best to close the first set by a 10 point difference.

On the second set, Argentina pair stepped onto the court with a different attitude and blocking and serving as best weapons helped to get an important lead that the Spanish team slowly shortened up to the final when Elsa broke the parity and with Gallay serving out of the field closed the set by the minimum difference with a great celebration for the rivals.

"We played a match we did not expect. Our reception and spike were not good and therefore we leave the field feeling very sad because we could not show what we train for" expressed Ana Gallay while Georgina Klug added: "I believe Spain played as we planned, good serving and pressure spiking. Now we have to recover for the next match next Monday".

On Monday the match v Agatha-Barbara will take place at 11.00 while on Wednesday at 22.00 they will face Slukova-Hermannova CZE.
