Argentina will face Brazil in Quarter-Finals after the host team eliminated France

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 16, 2016 - This Wednesday at 22.15 Argentina will play Quarter-Finals of the Olympic Games Rio 2016 after an outstanding preliminary round, when it finished on top of Pool A v the host team of Brazil in the "classical" South American duel. Previously Canada will face Russia, USA v Poland and Italy v Iran, respectively.

Argentina started their participation at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 v Iran showing a great level and showing a high level at the start of the competition.

Then, the whole World talked about the great victory v Russia 3-1 to follow, on its lowest performance facing the other title holder Poland and losing in a tied but straight sets match to close the phase with victories over Cuba and Egypt. Never thought, the team coached by Julio Velasco finished topping Pool A thanks also to the other results of the pool with Russia overcoming Poland in tiebreaker. An historical milestone for the Albicelestes.

In the other pool, the tied mantained four teams for only three berths at Quarter-Finals. With Italy already qualified and on top of the pool even though they lost their last match v Canada, that victory and the one of the USA, that recovered and also qualified, left the fourth berth for the winner of the last match Brazil v France.

Argentina and Brazil faced themselves in a friendly tour prior to the FIVB World League in Salta and Jujuy and also at the first weekend of the FIVB World League in Brazil. Argentina defeated Brazil at Sydney Olympic Games 2000 also in Quarter-Finals.
