This week the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) released some numbers of a memorable season full of particularities in every competition. Long matches, records and players who continue to raise a sport that permanently bet on improve to become the number one family entertainment in the world.

The first high point was undoubtedly the Italy-Bulgaria World Championship that dominated the season with 94 matches played at two venues, something that occured for the first time in the history of the competition. The bipartisan organization was one of the news of a tournament that had Poland´s Bartosz Kurek as top scorer with 171 points, exactly 100 tallies below the all time record, established in 2006 by Hector Soto from Puerto Rico. Within the top 3 continues the Argentine Marcos Milinkovic, who with 193 was the top scorer and MVP in the 2002 World Championship and was later overtaken by Soto in 2006 and Mariusz Wlazly in 2014 (233).

2018 also saw the first edition of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), which came to replace the World League and established new benchmarks talking about records. For example, there are five players among those who managed to score more than 30 points in a match, led by Jiang Chuan of China with 37. Regarding totals, Brazilian Wallace de Souza is at the top with 277 points in the competition, just four more than Jiang, but with 19 matches against 15 of the Asian.

Expectations for 2019 increase in a competition that will be one of the top events of the calendar and that will go through Argentina during the first weekend, when Marcelo Méndez´s team faces Portugal, Canada and Bulgaria.
