This weekend the first round of the inaugural edition of the Snow Volleyball World Tour in Austria was played and it was with a bronze medal for Argentina. Virginia Zonta, Julieta Puntin, Cecilia Peralta and Eugenia Tuliz stayed with the bronze after beating the Czech Republic and gave our country a historic medal in a winter sport.

The national team, which in the group stage defeated Austria and fell to the Czech Republic 2, then had a perfect rally against Japan and the Czech Republic in the round of 16 and quarter finals respectively. On semifinals they lost to Russia -who would later become champion- and the final celebration was again against the Czech Republic to reach the podium.

The FIVB itself mentioned that the Argentines were the sensation in Wagrain-Kleinarl, especially because in the case of our country there was no experience with medals in the Winter Olympic Games. However, the Argentine girls were strong in the snow and celebrated in the first stage of the tournament, which will now move to Plan de Corones/Kronplatz, Italy, from April 4 to 7.

Zonta, after the victory, said: “We are very, very happy, because this is the first time we play at a snow volleyball tournament and to be on the podium is perhaps something unbelievable. But I think we make a very good team”. The 2012 Olympian in beach volleyball continued: “At first, we said we would try to win at least one match in our pool, but then we kept winning and a spot on the podium became our goal. As it turned out, it is possible! We can now say that Argentina can be a winter sports country and I hope all these European teams will come to Bariloche for the third World Tour stop in August.”

After passing through Italy, the tournament will have a few weeks of rest to resume the competition from 1 to 4 August in San Carlos de Bariloche.
