JULIO VELASCO AND URIARTE AT CENARD

Uriarte and Velasco *

With the nice and important visit of the coach, Julio Velasco, the Argentine National Men Team had this Friday, the last training prior to the friendly matches they will be playing next week in Resistencia, Gral Pinedo, Formosa and Misiones vs. the Spanish National Men Team. The presence of Velasco at Cenard facilities means a great support to the new cycle of the Argentine team as he is an important international volleyball coach.

Julio Velasco, a very well known international volleyball Argentine coach, on his holidays in Buenos Aires visited his personal friend, Jon Uriarte and also watched the work the Argentine National Men Team is doing at the Cenard.

To have him here, is a great guarantee as he has very successful volleyball coaching career, first as Assistant Coach of the Argentine Men Team - years 1981 - 1983; then as Head Coach of the Italian National Men Team - years 1990 - 1996 - team with which got many titles as the World Champions in the years 1990 and 1994 and five World League titles and his wide experience outside volleyball - being during the years 1998/99 General Director of the S.S. Lazio - that at that year won the UEFA Cup.

“Uriarte was one of the players when I was at the Argentine National Team and we became friends and added to his knowledge and capability, he has a very special characteristic that at the present moment is very important in Argentina, his incredible drive, his great organization and view not only of the team itself but on how to improve volleyball in general" expressed Velasco in his visit at the Cenard. He also added: "I think this is a very interesting group of players, they are very young and they need time but with a lot of work, international competition and patience - because no one can seek on such young group good results against very experienced and older teams. I believe that with this group, if one works good they can make Argentina return to be among the best teams of the World, or at least among the teams that play the important matches". (*)

Uriarte and the boys finished a new working week and are ready to receive the Spanish National Men Team on their first experience under this new coaching group. The group, this week, included the important addition of Pablo Meana, who returned to the country after participating of the Greek League. With reference to the work done until now, Uriarte mentioned: "One of the things I want to emphasize on this working period, and that it was very important from the start, was the engagement of all the players and thereafter one feels very comfortable working with them". "One feels they answer our requests and that generates expectations waiting the group to keep growing. This week we work more on playing but still it is not a priority. The technical work is first goal". He also added with reference to the friendly matches: "The matches vs. Spain are a very good opportunity to see how the players react on a real match after the work we have done, even though it was a very short of time, it is good to evaluate their improvement. It will be very useful for the coaching team to get to know them better".

Gustavo Scholtis, one of the side players that will travel with the team on this first tour also expressed his feelings: "We are doing a very strong work, very intense and it can be seen that the group already improved from the start, three weeks ago. I hope we can make good use of this tour to keep improving and answering Jon requests, especially the new blocking - defence systems we are using. We want to show at the matches what we are doing on training sessions".

This Saturday the 12 players that will play the first tour will train at Cenard facilities and on Sunday they will travel to Chaco, while the group that remains in Buenos Aires will have off the weekend but will return to training on Monday under the coaching of Juan Cichello (in charge of the Youth and Junior Boys Teams).
